Dua Between Sujuud

Explanation By Ibn Uthaymeen

“…have mercy on me”: that is, shower your mercy on me. Thus, there is salvation from evils, sins and punishments in seeking for forgiveness, and in seeking for mercy is achieving the desired things.

This is because a persons affair will not be complete unless he is saved from the dreaded and attains the desired.

“…guide me”: we have earlier explained that the meaning of guidance the guidance of knowledge and understanding and the guidance of attainment and rationality.

…guard me” from every ailment. There are two types of diseases: Disease of the heart, as stated by Allah – the most High:

“In their hearts is a disease (of doubt and hypocrisy) and Allah has increased their disease” (2:10), and physical ailment, which affects the limbs and body.

When you ask Allah – the Mighty and Sublime – for well-being, it entails safety from both forms of diseases. The disease of the heart is worse than the disease of the body.

If one is patient over the disease of the body, and hopes for reward from Allah – the Mighty and Sublime, it becomes a source of upsurge in his ranks, obliteration of his sins, and the ailment ends with death.

Death is the end of every living thing, there is no way out. However, the disease of the heart – and refuge is sought with Allah – corrupts this world and the hereafter.

If a heart is contaminated with doubt, associating partners with Allah, hypocrisy, hatred of what Allah has revealed and disdain for some of the intimate friends of Allah and others, such a person is a looser in this life and the hereafter.

Hence, it is important for you to bring to mind whenever you ask Allah – the Mighty and Sublime – for protection that you are asking Him for safety from the diseases of the heart and the body; and the diseases of the heart revolves around doubt, associating partners with Allah or base desires.

…provide me with sustenance” that is, provision which sustains the body such as food, drink, clothing, shelter and others, and the provision which sustains the mind such as beneficial knowledge and righteous deeds.

This supplication encompasses both forms of sustenance. There are two types of provision: that which sustains the body and that which sustains the mind.

So when one says, “provide me…”, he is beseeching Allah for both forms. As such, it is important that one adheres to these supplications which the Prophet M taught his Ummah and which he would quickly teach a new Muslim.

Allah alone, grants success. End of Explanation

All of this incorporates all what you need in this life and the hereafter. Forgive me, have mercy upon me, guide me: All of this is asking Allah to what benefits you in the hereafter.

Mend my affairs and grant me health, sustenance and raise my rank: All of this in this dunya. You need this, without it you can’t go on, you can’t live.

This is how we worship Allah. This is how a proper Muslim worship Allah 24/7. It’s not going to the Maajid on Friday and it’s not going to church on Sunday, and then the rest of the week we don’t know anything about our religion and how to deal with others.

It is a full package, it’s a package deal. You take it all or leave it all. And this is the beauty of Islam.

This is why all non Muslims come to Islam in the hundreds of thousands and in the millions. What brings them to it?

This connection between the servant and his Lord. No mediators, there’s no one in between. And this is why other religions will look into how the Muslims pray to their Lord glorifying him, not anyone else.

He has no associates, no one can come and say listen, Allah has an associate, He has a son, and this son of His created Mars or Venus. Nobody ever claimed that.

Everybody knows that it’s only Him who is the creator of the heavens and the Earth and what’s between them.

This is why we devote all of our worship and all of our love, all of our ibada, all of our gratitude and submissiveness to Him alone.
