Commentary

Prophet Musa (peace be upon him) asked Allah with this supplication for a great and significant matter.

When Allah commanded him to invite the most obstinate people on earth to faith, they were characterized by disbelief, tyranny, numerous armies, and false claims of divinity.

Given the paramount importance of this matter, prophet Musa AS sought Allah’s guidance for some requests and purposes that would aid his call.

Indeed, supplication is the believer’s weapon, attracting goodness and repelling evil.

The supplicant, trusting in his generous Lord, receives according to his expectations, as the Prophet Muhammad (peace be upon him) conveyed Allah’s words: “I am just as My slave thinks I am, (i.e. I am able to do for him what he thinks I can do for him) and I am with him if He remembers Me.”

Prophet Musa AS began by saying: “My Lord, expand my chest for me,” meaning widen it with light, faith, and wisdom, so that he could bear all kinds of verbal and physical challenges.

The expansion of the chest transforms the burden of responsibility into ease, bliss, and facilitation.

He further requested: “And ease my affair for me,” asking for facilitation in every matter he undertakes and the paths he treads in the way of Allah.

Ibn Saadi remarked that making things easy for the supplicant means enabling them to approach various matters from their appropriate angles, addressing each person in a way suitable to them, and invoking them through the most effective ways leading to the acceptance of their message.

Recognizing the crucial role of effective communication in calling to Allah, prophet Musa AS continued: “And untie the knot from my tongue. So that they may understand my speech.” Here, he asked Allah for guidance to articulate his call with wisdom, influencing people’s minds and emotions through eloquence and gentle actions.

Musa AS also asked Allah to remove the impediment in his speech, known as “lisp,” which occurred when he was offered a burning coal and a date, and he chose the coal, which was placed on his tongue when he was a child in the house of Asiya, Pharaoh’s wife.

The request wasn’t for a complete removal but rather to enable clear understanding and comprehension.

After making other requests, Musa AS asked for a minister from his family, his brother Aaron, stating:

“So that we may exalt You much and remember You much. Indeed, You are ever of us Observant.”

This highlighted the purpose behind these requests: to engage in abundant remembrance and glorification of Allah.

This blessed supplication encompasses seeking assistance in matters of worship, obedience, remembrance, and glorification.

Therefore, it is recommended for the supplicant to mention the reason for their supplication, especially when it concerns religious matters.

Key Insights:

  1. Emphasis on the virtue of remembrance, as all worship revolve around remembering Allah.
  2. The acknowledgment that supplication is the primary worship for which creation exists.
  3. The role of remembrance in aiding the servant in performing acts of obedience and facing challenges.
  4. The virtue of glorification, as it is an integral part of remembrance.
  5. The importance of invoking Allah’s names and attributes in supplication, as each name carries a unique form of servitude and reward.
  6. The significance of presenting multiple requests in supplication, demonstrating humility and complete reliance on Allah.
  7. The recognition that religious matters hold the highest importance and should be a primary focus for every supplicant.
  8. The need for a supplicant to combine their prayers with practical efforts, seeking the means to achieve their goals.

Overall, this supplication exemplifies a comprehensive approach to seeking Allah’s guidance and assistance in matters of faith, worship, and calling others to the path of righteousness.

The following is taken from Tafsir Ibn Kathir:

(Musa) said: “O my Lord! Open for me my chest, and ease my task for me.” Musa requested his Lord to expand his chest for his mission.

For verily, He was commanding him with a great task and a weighty affair. He was sending him to the mightiest king on the face of the earth at that time.

He was the most arrogant and severe of all people in his disbelief, and He had the largest army and the most powerful kingdom. He was the most tyrannical and the most obstinate of rulers.

His case was such that he claimed not to know Allah at all, and that he knew of no god for his subjects other than himself.

Along with this, Musa lived in his home for a period of time as a child. He stayed in Fir`awn’s own room and slept on his bed.

Then, after this, he killed one of their people and feared that they would retaliate by killing him in return.

Thus, he fled from them and remained an outlaw during this entire time. Then, after all of this, His Lord sent him to them as a warner calling them to worship Allah alone, without associating partners with Him. This is why he said,

O my Lord! Open for me my chest, and ease my task for me. This means, “I cannot perform this task if You do not help me, aid me and support me.”

And loosen the knot from my tongue, that they understand my speech. This is referring to the lisp that he had.

This lisp was a result of an incident when he was presented a date and a hot coal stone and he placed the coal on his tongue instead of the date.

However, he did not ask Allah to remove this affliction all together. Rather, he asked for removal of his stammering so the people would understand what he intended in his speech.

He was only asking for what was necessary to deliver his message. If he had asked for the removal of his affliction in its entirety, it would have been cured for him.

However, the Prophets do not ask for any more than what is required. Therefore, he was left with the remnants of this accident that took place with his tongue.
