Transliteration

Rabb-ighfir li, wa tubb `alayya, innaka Antat-Tawwabul-Ghafoor.

Explanation

If prophet Muhammad SAW, the forgiven one seeks forgiveness for his past and future sins, and the Prophet ﷺ counts them seeking forgiveness in this number, then how about us, who sin day and night while Allah is All-Knowing?

It is more appropriate for us to strive with a greater number. This is a mercy from Allah to His servants, as the Prophet ﷺ said,

All children of Adam are prone to error, and the best of those who err are the repentant.’ So, Allah has provided a remedy for their mistakes through seeking forgiveness.

When saying, ‘My Lord, forgive me,’ one seeks the Lord’s magnanimity to cover and forgive the servant’s sins. Saying, ‘and accept my repentance,’ implies seeking guidance to repent, and repentance is the servant’s return from disobedience to obedience.

It is the servant’s success in repenting, followed by its acceptance by Allah.

Saying, ‘for You are the Accepter of repentance, the Most-Forgiving, the Most-Merciful,’ provides a reason for the request.

It is a means by which the supplicant implores to attain what is sought. ‘The Accepter of repentance’ is one of Allah’s beautiful names in an exaggerated form due to the frequent repentance He accepts from His servants.

‘The Most-Merciful’ is the one who covers the sins of His servants with His concealment.

In conclusion, the supplicant should invoke Allah with His beautiful names that align with the desired outcome, in accordance with the Quranic guidance: ‘And to Allah belong the best names, so invoke Him by them.'”
