The basic principle concerning the wording of dua (supplication) outside prescribed acts of worship is that there are no restrictions, and the one who is offering supplication may choose whatever supplication he likes and whatever best suits his aim.

The Power of Dua

Dua, which means supplication, is an act of worship in Islam that involves humbly asking Allah for His blessings, guidance, and assistance.

You can invoke Allah to grant you a righteous spouse. If there is a particular person you want to marry, then you can ask Allah to grant you what is good or facilitate the matter for you if it really entails good, as you do not know what is really good for you.

Sheikh Ahmad Kutty, a senior lecturer and an Islamic scholar at the Islamic Institute of Toronto, Ontario, Canada, states:

Allah says {And of them (also) is he who says: Our Lord! Give unto us in the world that which is good and in the Hereafter that which is good, and guard us from the doom of Fire.

The Prophet Muhammad (peace and blessings be upon him) told us that we should turn to Allah and seek His help in all matters.

He alone knows all the hidden things and only He has the perfect knowledge of the future. He has power to make things easy for us and guide us to right decisions.

Therefore, you should have full trust in Allah and at the same time ask Him to grant you a righteous spouse and to make easy what is good for you.

We are to use our God-given resources and expend our best efforts while praying to Allah for guiding and blessing us to realize all legitimate aspirations and dreams.

If, having done that, your efforts do not materialize, simply say “that was Allah’s will.”

While trying your best, never stop praying to Allah to grant you your wish. In order to do this, you may use any of the relevant prayers or supplications or improvise your own; for duaa can be made in your own tongue and there is no taboo on praying for things of this world and other world.

The Best Times to Make Dua

While dua can be made at any time, there are certain times that are considered especially blessed and opportune for making supplication. These include:

During the last third of the night: This is a time when Allah descends to the lowest heaven and asks, “Is there anyone who seeks My forgiveness, that I may forgive him? Is there anyone who asks Me, that I may give him? Is there anyone who seeks My help, that I may help him?”

Between the Adhan and Iqama: This is the time when duas are accepted, as confirmed by the Prophet Muhammad (peace be upon him).

On the day of Arafat: This is the day when millions of Muslims gather in the plain of Arafat during the Hajj pilgrimage to make dua and seek Allah’s forgiveness and blessings.

Other times when du’a is accepted are the following:

  • Laylat al-Qadar.
  • In the depths of the night.
  • Following the prescribed prayers.
  • Between the adhan and the iqamah.
  • When the call for the prescribed prayers is given.
  • When rain falls.
  • At a certain time of the night.
  • A certain time on Friday.
  • When drinking Zamzam water.
  • When prostrating.
  • When hearing the crowing of a rooster.
  • Du’a of one who is sick

This is the optimal guide for making any Supplication:

  • Make your heart present and completely focus on Allah
  • Humble yourself and submit to Allah.
  • Repent for your sins and ask for forgiveness.
  • Choose a time in which dua is readily accepted.
  • Start by praising Allah. Ask with persistence, love and fear.
  • Give adaqah before making dua.
  • Perform wudu (Ablution), face the qiblah and raise your hands.
  • Send salawat upon the Prophet SAW.
  • Ask Allah through His Oneness and Names.

Qualities to look for in a husband

There is nothing which it is more important for both parties to focus on than religious commitment and attitude.

With regard to the husband, the Prophet (peace and blessings of Allah be upon him) advised the guardians (walis) of women:

“If there comes to you one whose attitude and commitment to religion pleases you, then marry him (to your female relative), for if you do not do that, there will be much trouble and corruption in the land.”

Narrated by al-Tirmidhi, 1084; Ibn Majah, 1967

Qualities to look for in a wife

With regard to the wife, the Prophet (peace and blessings of Allah be upon him) gave the following advice:

“Women are married for four things : wealth, lineage, beauty and religious commitment. Marry the one who is religious, may your hands be rubbed with dust! (i.e., may you prosper).”

Narrated by al-Bukhari; Muslim, 1466

Al-Hafiz ibn Hajar said: “The meaning is that what is appropriate for the man who is religious and chivalrous is that religion must be the ultimate focus in all things, and especially with regard to the choice of a lifelong companion. So the Prophet (peace and blessings of Allah be upon him) commanded him to seek a religious woman , since religion is his ultimate goal.” Fath al-Bari, 9/135

Conclusion

Making dua for a good spouse is an important aspect of the process of finding the right partner. By seeking Allah’s guidance and help, we can trust in His plan and stay focused and hopeful during the search.

Reciting the duas mentioned in this blog with sincerity and conviction, especially during special times, can help increase the likelihood of our prayers being answered. May Allah guide us all to find the right spouse and bless our marriages with happiness, love, and harmony.
