The Longest Surah In The Quran: Find Out

The longest surah in the Quran is Surah Al-Baqarah, which is the second chapter. Surah Al-Baqarah consists of 286 verses (ayat) and covers a wide range of topics, including guidance for personal conduct, legal principles, and stories of previous prophets.

The Longest Surah In The Quran

Surah Al-Baqarah, the largest chapter in the Quran, comprises 286 ayat, 40 rukus, and 6201 words. Positioned within the first three juz, it was the initial revelation in Madina. “Baqarah” translates to “heifer” or “cow.” Some scholars assert that the Quran’s final words are found in this Surah, which also features Ayatul Kursi, one of the most significant verses, and the longest ayat in the Quran.

If we look closely at the end of Surah Al Faatihah and the opening of Surah Baqarah, we find that the relationship between these two soorahs is very much similar to a supplication and the response it evokes or the acceptance it receives.

Surah Fatiha ends with the words: ‘The path of those on whom You have bestowed Your favour, not of those who have earned Your anger, nor of those who have gone astray:

Immediately thereafter follows Surah Al Baqarah with the opening words: Alif, lam, meem. This is the Book about which there is no doubt, Guidance for the God-fearing:

It is as if the divine guidance a person seeks in surah Fatiha is given to them straight away to abide by and follow in the next soorah.

When a perceptive person of fine intellect and good taste sees such a sudden response to his supplication, they are naturally overwhelmed with a deep sense of gratitude and praise for Allah.

Structure of Surah Al Baqarah

This Surah is entitled Al Baqarah (the cow) because it mentions at one point the story of the cow (see verses 67-73).

The name of this sooarh does not, however, signify that the cow is its main theme. It simply marks it as the soorah in which the cow is mentioned.

The greater part of this soorah was revealed in the earlier Madinan period, soon after the emigration of the Prophet SAW to Madeenah.

6) A miraculous incident once happened to a Companion named Usayd ibn Hudayr.

Narrated Usaid bin Hudair: That while he was reciting Surat Al-Baqara (The Cow) at night, and his horse was tied beside him, the horse was suddenly startled and troubled.

When he stopped reciting, the horse became quiet, and when he started again, the horse was startled again. Then he stopped reciting and the horse became quiet too. He started reciting again and the horse was startled and troubled once again.

Then he stopped reciting and his son, Yahya was beside the horse. He was afraid that the horse might trample on him. When he took the boy away and looked towards the sky, he could not see it.

The next morning he informed the Prophet who said, “Recite, O Ibn Hudair! Recite, O Ibn Hudair!” Ibn Hudair replied, “O Allah’s Messenger (ﷺ)! My son, Yahya was near the horse and I was afraid that it might trample on him, so I looked towards the sky, and went to him.

When I looked at the sky, I saw something like a cloud containing what looked like lamps, so I went out in order not to see it.”

The Prophet (ﷺ) said, “Do you know what that was?” Ibn Hudair replied, “No.” The Prophet (ﷺ) said, “Those were Angels who came near to you for your voice and if you had kept on reciting till dawn, it would have remained there till morning when people would have seen it as it would not have disappeared.”

longest surah in the Quran

Shaykh Abul-Yamān Adnān Al-Masqarī, may Allāh preserve and protect him, said:

‘Surah Al-Baqarah is barakah (blessing). By Allah, amazing barakah. For how many people complain regarding an affair, they complain about magic, possession or evil-eye, so we advise him with Surah Al-Baqarah and he reads it, and then all of what he was suffering from goes away.

So it is not befitting for the Muslim to be negligent towards this Sūrah. It has come that the Prophet (ﷺ) said:

“Whoever recites the last two verses from Surah Al-Baqarah at night, they will suffice him.”

It has been said regarding “they will suffice him” that it will suffice him [from performing] the night prayer, and it has been said that they will suffice him from the evil of every evil one during that night.

Also, regarding Sūrah Al-Baqarah: “Verily, Shaytan runs away from the house in which Sūrah Al-Baqarah is recited”.

It has come in some wordings: “(The house) in which Sūrah Al-Baqarah is recited for three nights”.

And it has come in some: “Verily Shaytān runs away from the house in which Sūrah Al-Baqarah is recited for three nights”.

Whether it’s this wording or the other, the addition of “three nights” is weak. Nonetheless, we advise anyone who complains of evil eye, envy, feeling tight chested in his house, a lot of issues between him and his family, severe sadness, severe depression or anxiety, tiredness; especially once he enters the house.

Or the woman who complains of feeling tight chested towards her husband, or a lot of problems, or bad manners from herself or her husband; all of this is not natural.

The origin of the life of a believer is goodness, his life is happy, and these affairs don’t occur in a believers house (in which it’s inhabitants are) preserving the prayers, far from music, television and prohibited pictures.

Except if it was to happen due to envy, or evil-eye or possession from the shaytān or magic. And the cure for all of this is Sūrah Al-Baqarah.

Read Surah Al-Baqarah and by Allah you will see an amazing impact from the first day. Some of those from whom we’ve heard their stories, they had big issues, so he read Sūrah Al-Baqarah the first day, second day, he didn’t come to complete the third day except that the magic, evil-eye, and envy had all gone.

So be on guard with regards to your life and don’t punish yourself. As for those who torment themselves with sins and their houses are completely filled with Haram affairs, television etc; these have brought the Shaytan into their homes.

They welcomed the depression, anxiety and sadness. They brought in the means of agony in this dunya, and the punishment of the ākhirah is worse. The calamity of sins is enormous.

Some people are rightous and their household is rightous nonetheless they still complain of these affairs; read Surah Al-Baqarah, seek refuge in Allah, read your daily adhkar (rememberences).

It has reached us that one of the brothers came across an unexpected matter in his life and he was continously feeling tight chested, so he read Sūrah Al-Baqarah and behold the wall cracked open.

The wall cracked open, the wall split. He then asked some of the mashāyikh and brothers and they said perhaps there is something there in the wall, read.

So he read and it cracked open more, so they destroyed the (rest) of that area and found magic inside placed there by the one who built it.

Who is the one that cracked open the wall? Allāh. This Sūrah Al-Baqarah is not a light affair. The Prophet (ﷺ) has said:

“(Read Sūrah Al-Baqarah) for indeed doing so is a blessing, and leaving it off is a regret”. [Muslim 804]

Some people of knowledge mention that Sūrah Al-Baqarah contains one thousand commands, one thousand prohibitions and one thousand reports. Sūrah Al-Baqarah.

“And leaving it off is a regret”, meaning, whoever leaves it off then it will be means of sorrow for him.

“And the Batala cannot confront it”, meaning the magicians cannot confront it. Thus, we have been informed by some of our brothers in A’moud that Shaykh Yahyā (may Allāh preserve him) reads it everyday.
