What Is Sabr in Islam?

Lexically, Sabr (patience) means restraint. However technically, it means controlling oneself regarding three things:

  • Firstly: Upon obedience to Allah,
  • Secondly: From the prohibitions of Allah,
  • Thirdly: Over Allah’s preordainments he finds painful.

These are the categories of patience mentioned by the people of knowledge.

The first matter: Being patient when doing what Allah says is important because it can be tough for your mind and body.

Sometimes, your body might feel tired, or you might find it hard to give money for Zakaat or go for Hajj. Doing what’s right can be stressful, so you need to stay patient and tough it out. Allah the Exalted says:

“O you who believe! Endure and be more patient (than your enemy) and guard your territory by stationing army unit permanently at the places where enemy can attack you.” Surah Aal-Imraan: 200

The second matter: Being patient with what Allah tells us not to do means avoiding the things He forbids.

When our inner desires push us toward doing wrong, like lying, cheating, using money in the wrong way, doing things we shouldn’t with others, drinking alcohol, or stealing, we need to stop ourselves. It takes strength and self-control to resist these temptations and stay away from what’s wrong.

As for the third matter: Patience over the preordainments of Allah he finds painful because Allah’s preordainments may be suitable (for the servant) or painful for him.

Those he finds suitable require gratitude; and giving gratitude is from the acts of obedience.

So, being patient regarding that is from the first category of patience. As for those he finds painful; i.e., they bring discomfort to the individual.

So he may be tested on his body or in his wealth when he loses them. He may equally be tested regarding his family and his community. The aspects of tests are diverse and they all require patience and endurance.

So, the individual should be patient regarding the things that are prohibited to him such as expressing distress with the tongue, the mind or limbs.

This is because the individual has four conditions during a trial:

  • The first condition: that he scorns.
  • The second condition: that he is patient.
  • The third: that he is pleased.
  • The fourth: that he is thankful.

These are four states the individual comes in when he is befallen with a trial.

Virtues Of Patience (Sabr)

Allah has made patience like a horse that never gets tired, an army that can never be defeated and a strong fortress that can never be breached.

Patience and victory are twin brothers, for victory comes with patience, relief comes with distress and ease comes with hardship.

Quranic Verses On The Virtues Of Patience

In the Quran, Allaah has guaranteed those who are patient that He will give them reward without measure.

He tells them that He is with them by guiding and supporting them and granting them a clear victory. Allah says:

“Surely, Allah is with those who are As-Sabirun (the patient).”

Allah tells us if we are patient and pious, the plot of the enemy cannot do any harm, even if he is powerful, as He says:

وَإِن تَصۡبِرُواْ وَتَتَّقُواْ لَا يَضُرُّكُمۡ كَيۡدُهُمۡ شَيۡئًاۗ إِنَّ ٱللَّهَ بِمَا يَعۡمَلُونَ مُحِيطٌ

“But if you remain patient and become Al-Muttaqun (the pious), not the least harm will their cunning do to you. Surely, Allah surrounds all that they do.”

[Surah Al ‘Imran 3:120]

Allah tells us that the patience and piety of his Prophet Yusuf brought him to a position of power and strength, as He says:

إِنَّهُۥ مَن يَتَّقِ وَيَصۡبِرۡ فَإِنَّ ٱللَّهَ لَا يُضِيعُ أَجۡرَ ٱلۡمُحۡسِنِينَ

“Verily, he who fears Allah with obedience to Him (by abstaining from sins and evil deeds, and by performing righteous good deeds), and is patient, then surely, Allah makes not the reward of the Muhsinun (good-doers) to be lost.”

[Surah Yusuf verse 90]

Allah has connected success to patience and piety, and the believers understand that. Allah says:

“O you who believe! Endure and be more patient (than your enemy), and guard your territory by stationing army units permanently at the places from where the enemy can attack you, and fear Allah, so that you may be successful.”

[Surah Al ‘Imran 3:200]

[Surah Al ‘Imran 3:146]

Allah has given glad tidings of three things to those who are patient, each of which is better than that for which the people of this world envy one another. Allah says:

“but give glad tidings to As- Sabirun (the patient) *. Who, when afflicted with calamity, say: ‘Truly, to Allah we belong and truly, to Him we shall return.’ * They are those on whom are the Salawat (i.e. who are blessed and will be forgiven) from their Lord, and (they are those who) receive His Mercy, and it is they who are the guided ones.”

[Surah al-Baqarah 2:155-157]

Allah states that the victory of attaining Paradise and being saved from Hell will be won only by those who are patient, as He says:

إِنِّى جَزَيۡتُهُمُ ٱلۡيَوۡمَ بِمَا صَبَرُوٓاْ أَنَّهُمۡ هُمُ ٱلۡفَآئِزُونَ

“Verily, I have rewarded them this Day for their patience; they are indeed the ones that are successful.”

[Surah al-Mu’minun 23:111]

Allah tells us that patience and forgiveness are among the things recommended by Allah and those who pay heed to this will never lose, as He says:

وَلَمَن صَبَرَ وَغَفَرَ إِنَّ ذَٰلِكَ لَمِنۡ عَزۡمِ ٱلۡأُمُورِ

“And verily, whosoever shows patience and forgives, that would truly be from the things recommended by Allah.”

[Surah al-Shura 42:43]

Allah commanded His Messenger to wait patiently for His Decision, and told him that his patience is not but from Him, and by virtue of patience all calamities become easy, as He said:

وَٱصۡبِرۡ لِحُكۡمِ رَبِّكَ فَإِنَّكَ بِأَعۡيُنِنَاۖ

“So wait patiently (O Muhammad) for the Decision of your Lord, for verily, you are under Our Eyes.”

[Surah al-Tur 52:48]
