Laylatul Qadr Dua in English

O Allah, I ask You for well-being in this life and the next.

Explanation by Shaykh Abdur-Razzāq Al-Badr:

Why this Supplication on Laylatul Qadr?

Upon you is to invoke Allah, the Most High, and to beseech Him (in this night), for indeed Laylatul Qadr (The Night of Decree) is from the most hopeful of nights in which supplications are answered, so increase in supplicating on this tremendous and blessed night.

“What should I say in it” clearly shows that it was well-established with them that this night was a night for invoking Allah and beseeching Him.

However, what she wanted was that the Prophet (ﷺ) inform her of a supplication that was most appropriate for this night and its lofty status.

And this supplication without doubt is extremely relevant to this great and blessed night.

The scholars – Allah have mercy on them – have mentioned various statements concerning the wisdom behind calling upon Allah with this supplication on Laylatul Qadr.

From these statements, the following two are the most apparent:

First

During these ten blessed nights, it is highly advised for a Muslim to emulate the Prophet (ﷺ) by dedicating the entire night to worship, tightening their lower garment, waking their family, and exerting greater effort than usual.

One should not assume completion or perfection in worship; instead, continuously pray for forgiveness, acknowledging shortcomings and seeking pardon with the words,

“O Allah, You are Oft-Pardoning. You love to Pardon, so pardon me. O my Lord, these are my efforts, the efforts of one who has done little; I have fallen short in fulfilling your rights, so pardon me.”

And this is how the true believers who have completed and perfected their Iman are; they do their utmost to complete and perfect their worship and at the same time they believe that they have fallen short.

Allah, the Most High, has mentioned in Surah Al-Mu’minun the characteristics of the true believers who have completed and perfected their Iman,

“And those who give that (their charity) which they give (and also do other good deeds) with their hearts full of fear (whether their alms and charities, etc., have been accepted or not), because they are sure to return to their Lord” (Al-Mu’minun 23: 60).

Have we fulfilled our duty to Allah and feared Him to the best of our ability? Have we worshipped Him to the utmost? Although we’ve strived to increase our worship, have we truly done justice to it? Have we perfected our worship and actualized sincerity and truthfulness with Allah?

Asking for pardon, saying, “O Allah, You are Oft-Pardoning, You love to Pardon, so pardon me,” acknowledges our shortcomings and seeks forgiveness for our efforts as imperfect servants.

Second

The scholars highlight another aspect of wisdom in invoking Allah with this powerful supplication on Laylatul Qadr, underscoring its profound relevance to this blessed night.

Allah, the Most High, states about Laylatul Qadr,

“Therein (that night) is decreed every matter of ordainments” (Surah Ad-Dukhan 44:4).

This signifies that during this night, all events for the upcoming year are ordained and recorded.

Scholars refer to this as the yearly decree, distinct from the life-time decree, which pertains to an individual’s existence and is determined in the womb.

As for the yearly decree, then this is what occurs on Laylatul Qadr. In Laylatul Qadr is decreed and written all that which will take place until the following Laylatul Qadr.

So be conscious of what is going to be written on this night until the next Laylatul Qadr, and ask Allah, the Mighty and Majestic, on this night to pardon you.

Because if Allah, the Most High, pardons you, how will your condition be for the entire coming year?! How will your affair be during the whole year if you attain the pardon of Allah on this blessed night?!

And this is why if a servant in this night is truthful with Allah, the Most High, when earnestly imploring Him with this supplication “Allahumma innaka Afuwwun Tuhibbul Afwa Fa‍fu Anni”, it will have a great effect on him during the whole year.

So strive hard to make this supplication and do not waste this opportunity, for indeed the effects of this supplication are tremendous and last the entire year.

Shaykh Abdur-Razzaq Al-Badr (Allāh preserve him) also mentioned the following regarding this tremendous supplication in his book “Fiqh Al-Ad’iyah wa Al- Adhkār” [Vol. 3, pp. 265-269.]

Indeed striving hard to seek this night (Laylatul Qadr) exerting oneself in performing acts of obedience therein as well as supplicating abundantly are from the attributes of the excellent and the righteous.

Rather, on this night, they beseech Allah to grant them pardon and well-being because it is the night in which are written the actions of all servants for the entire year.

So in this night they call upon Allah and they beseech Him. And during the entire year they exert themselves and strive hard to perform righteous actions. They seek aid from Allah and ask Him to grant them success.

Therefore it is only good for a Muslim that he increases in this supplication “Allahumma innaka Afuwwun Tuhibbul Afwa Fa fu ‘Anni” at all times and especially on Laylatul Qadr in which is decreed every matter of ordainments.

And a Muslim should be fully aware that Allah, the Mighty and Majestic, is oft-Pardoning, Generous, and loves to pardon.

The Wisdom Behind Asking For Pardon on This Night

Ibn Rajab (رحمه الله) said: “Asking [Allah] for complete forgiveness on the Great Night of Decrees, after working hard at doing good deeds on it and on the [last] ten nights, has only been prescribed because those who know [about Allah properly] work hard at doing [good] deeds, and after that, they [still] don’t see for themselves any good deeds, nor a [good level or] state, nor [good, rewardable] speech.

So they go back to asking for complete forgiveness, like one does who sins and falls short of what’s upon him.”

[Lataʾif Al-Maʿarif, p. 242]

Ibn Rajab also said: “Al-‘Afuww (The One Who pardons greatly) is from The Names of Allah The Most High; and He overlooks the wrongdoings of His servants, He is The One Who erases their trace from them.

He Loves to pardon; and so He Loves to pardon His servants, He likewise Loves from His servants that they should pardon each other, so if they pardon each other; He conducts His pardon with them; and His Pardon is more beloved to Him than His Punishment.”

[Lataʾif Al-Maʿarif, p. 279]

Yahya bin Mu’adh (رحمه الله) said: “The acquainted one is not the one whose outmost objective in hope isn’t to obtain pardon from Allah.”[Lataʾif Al-Maʿarif, p. 280]

Ibn al-Qayyim (رحمه الله) said: “The Prophet (ﷺ) said to the most obedient of the women of the Ummah, the most virtuous and the best of them, as-Siddeeqah bint as-Siddeeq when she said to the Messenger of Allah, if I come across Laylatul Qadr, what should I supplicate with, he replied:

‘Say (the above dua) Allah Subhanahu whilst His love for pardoning and repentance, created His creation upon characteristics, forms and circumstances which necessitate them repenting to Allah, them seeking forgiveness, their requesting Allah’s pardon and His forgiveness.”

[Shifa al-Aleel fee Mas’ail al-Qada wal Qadr wal Hikmah wa Ta’aleel 1/116]

Ibn al-Qayyim (رحمه الله) also said: “Allah Subhanahu loves His Sifat, as the Prophet (ﷺ) said: ‘O Allah, indeed You pardon and You love pardoning so pardon me.’

He also said: ‘Indeed Allah is Beautiful and loves beauty’, ‘indeed Allah is Pure and loves purity’, ‘indeed Allah is Witr and loves Witr’; it is narrated that ‘indeed I am All-knowing, I love everyone who has knowledge’. If Allah loves His Attributes which are established by Himself so how about His love for His Own Self.”

May Allah forgive us.
