Hadith

On the authority of Anas (رضي الله عنه): “Whenever the Prophet (ﷺ) (intended) to enter Al-kha-la (An empty place, used to answer the call of nature, i.e., the bathroom)” he would say: “Allahum-ma In-nee A’oo-dhu Bi-ka mi-nal khu-bu-thi wal-kha-ba-ith.”

[Al-Bukhari no. 142 and Muslim, no. 375]

Zayd ibn Arqam (may Allah be pleased with him) narrated that the Messenger of Allah (peace and blessings of Allah be upon him) said:

“These toilets are haunted (inhabited by devils), so when anyone of you goes to the toilet let him say, ‘A’udhu Billahi min al-khubthi wa’l-khabaith (I seek refuge with Allah from the male and female devils).”

(Narrated by Abu Dawud, 6; classed as sahih by al-Albani in Sahih Abi Dawud)
Dua Before Entering Toilet

Al-Hattab said: These places are singled out for seeking protection with Allah for two reasons:

Because they are toilets, and by Allah’s will the devils dominate toilets. The toilet is a filthy place where one should not verbally remember Allah, so the shaytan takes advantage if one does not remember Him, because remembrance of Allah drives him away.

So the command to seek refuge with Allah before that means that one will be protected from the shaytan until he comes out. End quote.

Shaykh Ibn ‘Uthaymin (may Allah have mercy on him) said in al-Sharh al-Mumti’ (1/83):

The purpose of this seeking refuge is to seek protection with Allah against al-khubthi wa’l-khabaith (the male and female devils) because this is an evil and unclean place (khabith), and the place that is khabith is the abode of al-khubthi wa’l-khabaith (the male and female devils).

So it is appropriate when wanting to enter the toilet to say: A’udhu Billahi min al-khubthi wa’l-khabaith (I seek refuge Allah from the male and female devils), so that no khubth (evil) or khabaith (evil spirits) will affect him. End quote.

This reason dictates that the Muslim should always seek refuge with Allah every time he enters the toilet, whether he intends to relieve himself or he is entering for some other purpose for which people use bathrooms nowadays, such as cleaning and so on.

Thus the Muslim will protect himself from the harm of the devils.

Dua For Leaving Toilet in Arabic

The dua for leaving toilet in Arabic is:

غُفْرَانَكَ

Transliteration: Ghufranaka

Ghufranaka Meaning

The meaning of ghufranaka in English is I ask You [O Allaah] for Your forgiveness.

Dua For Leaving Toilet

The saying of the Prophet (ﷺ): ‘Ghufrānak’ (I ask You (Allah) for forgiveness) is the acknowledgement that forgiveness of every act of sin and disobedience, as well as every shortcoming in fulfilling one’s obligations to Allah, can only be sought from Him!

There are no intermediaries who can grant forgiveness besides Allah, neither Prophets, saints nor Imams.

In explaining the reason for seeking forgiveness on this particular occasion, it has been said that the human being is incapable of completely fulfilling the obligation of offering gratitude (Shukr) to Allah for the blessings of

  • (1) providing the food and drink,
  • (2) digesting it,
  • (3) distributing the nutrition according to the body’s needs and then
  • (4) making the removal of the waste easy.

Realizing that he has definitely fallen short in properly fulfilling the obligation of expressing gratitude to Allah for this great blessing, the human being must make up for this shortcoming by seeking Allah’s forgiveness!

“The scholars have stated that the reason why one should seek forgiveness when exiting the toilet is that it is for not remembering Allah whilst one was in the toilet. The Muslim regards that as a shortcoming and makes up for it by asking for forgiveness.” [See al-Nihaayah fi Ghareeb al-Hadeeth by Ibn al-Atheer (3/703)]

In Islam, there are specific etiquettes (Adab) associated with using the toilet. These etiquettes are derived from the teachings of Prophet Muhammad (peace be upon him) and are considered part of good hygiene and manners.

Toilet Etiquettes in Islam

Here is a list of some basic toilet etiquettes in Islam:

  • Entering with the Right Foot: Enter the bathroom with your right foot and say, “Bismillah” (In the name of Allah).
  • Exiting with the Left Foot: Leave the bathroom with your left foot and say, “Ghufranak” (I seek Your forgiveness).
  • Privacy: Maintain privacy and avoid exposing your private parts to others.
  • Cleanliness: Ensure cleanliness by using water and/or toilet paper. Islam encourages the use of water for cleansing, which is considered more thorough and hygienic.
  • Avoid Facing or Turning Back to the Qiblah: While using the toilet, avoid facing or turning your back directly towards the Qiblah (the direction of the Kaaba in Mecca).
  • Silence and Focus: Maintain a focused and silent demeanor while in the bathroom. Avoid unnecessary talking or actions.
  • Use of the Left Hand: Use the left hand for cleaning yourself, as the right hand is considered more pure and is used for eating, greeting, and other clean activities.
  • Dua (Supplication): Upon leaving the bathroom, say the supplication “Ghufranak” again and thank Allah for the ability to relieve oneself.
  • Avoid Using Offensive Language: Refrain from using offensive or vulgar language while in the bathroom.
  • Conservation of Water: Be mindful of water usage, as wasting water is discouraged in Islam.
