7 Best Dua For Sick Person in Arabic and English

When you visit a sick person, you should choose the dua for sick person that is most comprehensive and eagerly seek those supplications transmitted from the Prophet (ﷺ). These are blessed supplications that encompass all good and are free from mistakes or errors.

1. Dua For Sick Person in Arabic

لاَ بَأْسَ طَهُورٌ إِنْ شَاءَ الله

Transliteration: La Ba’sa, Tahoorun, In Sha Allah.

Meaning: [This is] not harmful. Rather, it is a means of purification, if Allah Wills.

Hadith Text

In Saheeh al-Bukharee, on the authority of Ibn ‘Abbās (رضي الله عنه): who said: the Prophet (ﷺ) entered upon a bedouin to visit him due to his sickness. The narrator said: Whenever the Prophet (ﷺ) entered upon a sick person to visit him, he would say:

لاَ بَأْسَ طَهُورٌ إِنْ شَاءَ الله

Lā Ba’s(a), Tahoor(un), In Sha Allāh.

This sickness is not harmful. Rather, it is a means of purification, if Allāh Wills.

The sick bedouin responded saying: You said that it is a means of purification! No way! Rather, it is a fever boiling up inside an old man, causing him to visit the graves (i.e. causing his death). The Prophet (ﷺ) said: “Then, yes (it is as you say).”

The saying of the Prophet (ﷺ): ‘it is a means of purification, if Allāh Wills…’ – means: It is a means of purification for you from your sins, i.e. that which purifies you from the evil effects or consequences of your sins.

The Prophet (ﷺ) used to treat some of his wives by passing his right hand over the place of ailment and used to say:

اللَّهُمَّ رَبَّ النَّاسِ أَذْهِبِ الْبَاسَ، اشْفِهِ أَنْتَ الشَّافِي، لاَ شِفَاءَ إِلاَّ شِفَاؤُكَ، شِفَاءً لاَ يُغَادِرُ سَقَمًا

Transliteration

Adhhib il-bas, Rabbi l-nas washfi anta al-Shafi la shifa a illa shifa uka shifa an la yughadir saqaman.

Meaning

O Allah! Lord of the people! Remove the affliction and cure him. You are the One Who cures and there is no cure except Your cure, a cure that leaves behind no sickness.

From the Sunnah is that the visitor places his hand upon the body of the patient at the time when he intends to supplicate for him. You may say (Three times):

اللَّهُمَّ اشْفِ فُلانًا

Transliteration: Allahummash-fi fulan(an)

Meaning: O Allah! Cure So-and-So.

5. Dua

The Messenger of Allah (ﷺ) said: When a man comes to visit a sick person, he should say:

اللَّهُمَّ اشْفِ عَبْدَكَ يَنْكَأُ لَكَ عَدُوًّا أَوْ يَمْشِي لَكَ إِلَى صَلاَةٍ

Transliteration

Allahummashfi ‘abdaka yanka’u laka ‘aduwwan aw yamshi laka ilas-salah.

Meaning

O Allah, cure Your servant, who may then injure the enemy for Your sake or walk to the prayer for Your sake.

This dua seeks healing for the person and asks Allah to make them strong enough to serve Him by either defending against enemies or attending prayers.

You might also perform ruqyah by reciting:

بِاسْمِ اللَّهِ أَرْقِيكَ مِنْ كُلِّ شَىْءٍ يُؤْذِيكَ مِنْ شَرِّ كُلِّ نَفْسٍ أَوْ عَيْنِ حَاسِدٍ اللَّهُ يَشْفِيكَ بِاسْمِ اللَّهِ أَرْقِيكَ

Transliteration

Bismillahi arqeeka min kulli shayin yudheeka, min sharri kulli nafsin aw ‘aynin hasid Allahu yashfik, bismillahi arqeek.

Meaning

In the Name of Allah I perform ruqyah upon you, from everything which harms you, from the evil of every person or envious eye. May Allah cure you. In the Name of Allah I perform ruqyah upon you.

Dua For Sick

You might also say that which is confirmed in the two Saheehs, on the authority of ‘A’ishah (RadiyAllahu an-hā), that the Prophet (SallAllāhu Alaihi wa Sallam) used to say to the sick person:

بِاسْمِ اللَّهِ تُرْبَةُ أَرْضِنَا بِرِيقَةِ بَعْضِنَا لِيُشْفَى بِهِ سَقِيمُنَا بِإِذْنِ رَبِّنَا

Transliteration

Bismillahi Turbatu Ardina, Bi Reeqati Ba’dina, Yushfa saqeemuna, Bi-Idhni Rabbina.

Meaning

In the Name of Allah, with the surface soil of our land, (mixed) with the spittle (from the mouth) of one of us, our sick is healed, by the permission of our Rabb (Lord and Creator).

You may perform ruqyah by reciting (over the sick person) the ‘Opening’ chapter of the Qur’an (al-Fatihah), or the three chapters of Qur’an known as al-Mu’awwidhat (Soorah an-Nas (no. 114), soorah al-Falaq (no. 113) and soorah al-Ikhlās (no. 112))

Surah al-Ikhlās

بِسْمِ اللَّهِ الرَّحْمَٰنِ الرَّحِيمِ
1. قُلْ هُوَ اللَّهُ أَحَدٌ
2. اللَّهُ الصَّمَدُ
3. لَمْ يَلِدْ وَلَمْ يُولَدْ
4. وَلَمْ يَكُنْ لَهُ كُفُوًا أَحَدٌ

Transliteration

Bismillaahir Rahmaanir Raheem 

  1. Qul huwal laahu ahad
  2. Allah hus-samad
  3. Lam yalid wa lam yoolad
  4. Wa lam yakul-lahoo kufuwan ahad.

Meaning

In the name of Allah, Most Gracious, Most Merciful.

  1. Say: He is Allah, the One and Only;
  2. Allah, the Eternal, Absolute;
  3. He begetteth not, nor is He begotten;
  4. And there is none like unto Him.

Surah Falaq

بِسْمِ اللَّهِ الرَّحْمَٰنِ الرَّحِيمِ
1. قُلْ أَعُوذُ بِرَبِّ الْفَلَقِ
2. مِنْ شَرِّ مَا خَلَقَ
3. وَمِنْ شَرِّ غَاسِقٍ إِذَا وَقَبَ
4. وَمِنْ شَرِّ النَّفَّاثَاتِ فِي الْعُقَدِ
5. وَمِنْ شَرِّ حَاسِدٍ إِذَا حَسَدَ

Transliteration

Bismillaahir Rahmaanir Raheem 

  1. Qul a’oozu bi rabbil-falaq
  2. Min sharri maa khalaq
  3. Wa min sharri ghaasiqin izaa waqab
  4. Wa min sharrin-naffaa-saati fil ‘uqad
  5. Wa min sharri haasidin izaa hasad

Meaning

In the name of Allah, Most Gracious, Most Merciful.

  1. Say: I seek refuge with the Lord of the Dawn
  2. From the mischief of created things;
  3. From the mischief of Darkness as it overspreads;
  4. From the mischief of those who practise secret arts;
  5. And from the mischief of the envious one as he practises envy.

Surah Nas

بِسْمِ اللَّهِ الرَّحْمَٰنِ الرَّحِيمِ
1. قُلْ أَعُوذُ بِرَبِّ النَّاسِ
2. مَلِكِ النَّاسِ
3. إِلَٰهِ النَّاسِ
4. مِنْ شَرِّ الْوَسْوَاسِ الْخَنَّاسِ
5. الَّذِي يُوَسْوِسُ فِي صُدُورِ النَّاسِ
6. مِنَ الْجِنَّةِ وَالنَّاسِ

Transliteration

Bismillaahir Rahmaanir Raheem 

  1. Qul a’oozu birabbin naas
  2. Malikin naas
  3. Ilaahin naas
  4. Min sharril waswaasil khannaas
  5. Allazee yuwaswisu fee sudoorin naas
  6. Minal jinnati wannaas

Meaning

In the name of Allah, Most Gracious, Most Merciful.

  1. Say: I seek refuge with the Lord and Cherisher of Mankind,
  2. The King (or Ruler) of Mankind,
  3. The god (or judge) of Mankind,-
  4. From the mischief of the Whisperer (of Evil), who withdraws (after his whisper),-
  5. (The same) who whispers into the hearts of Mankind,-
  6. Among Jinns and among men.

On the authority of ‘A’ishah (RadiyAllahu ‘an-hā), that whenever the Messenger of Allah (SallAllähu Alaihi wa Sallam) was sick he would recite over himself the three chapters of the Qur’ān known as al-Mu’awwidhāt, and blow (over his palms).

So, when his pain became severe, I [i.e. ‘A’ishah (RadiyAllāhu ‘an-ha)], used to recite these chapters over him and wipe (over him) with his own hands, hoping for the blessings of his hands (SallAllāhu Alaihi wa Sallam).
