Text of The Hadith

On the authority of ‘Ali ibn Abi Talib (رضي الله عنه) that the Messenger of Allah (ﷺ) said: “A screen will be placed between the eyes of the jinn and the ‘awrah of the sons of Adam when one of them enters the toilet, if he says In the Name of Allah.

[Recorded by at-Tirmidhi 606, classed as sahih by al-Albani in Sahih al-Tirmidhi 496 & Sahih al-Jami 3611]

Explanation

Shaykh ‘Abdur-Razzaq al-Badr explains: The saying of the Prophet (ﷺ): Bis-mil-lāh means, In the Name of Allah, I remove my clothing, secking His protection from every evil being and every harm.

This is because the Name of Allah is like a seal – covering the human being which the Jinn cannot break open and get through.

One must not add to this expression “Ar-Rahman Ar-Raheem,” since the Prophet (ﷺ) stopped upon these words, for this particular occasion. In this same way, the Prophet (ﷺ) limited himself to these words (Bis-mil-lāh) before performing ablution (Wudoo’)’ and before cating.

On other occasions, he (SallAllahu Alaihi wa Sallam) added to the words ‘Bis-mil-lah’ other supplications, as when entering the bathroom, leaving one’s home, upon sleeping, etc.

From this we know that for every occasion the Prophet (ﷺ) has prescribed specific words. Hence, the believer must faithfully adhere to his specific words, keeping in mind that it is Revelation (from Allāh)!

Allah, the Most High, said:

“Your companion (Muhammad) has neither gone astray nor has erred, nor does he speak of (his own) desire. It is only a revelation revealed.” [53:2-4]
