It is proven in the religious texts that among the benefits of praying for forgiveness is a means of having a good life in this world, and a means of being provided with wealth and children, and the means of having rain.

Here is a list of dua for forgiveness from the Quran and Hadith in Arabic and English.

1. Dua For Forgiveness in Quran

رَبَّنَا فَاغْفِرْ لَنَا ذُنُوبَنَا وَكَفِّرْ عَنَّا سَيِّئَاتِنَا وَتَوَفَّنَا مَعَ الأَبْرَارِ

Transliteration

Rabbana fa-ghfir lana zunuubana wa-kaffir anna sayyi-aatina wa-tafawwafaa maal-abrar.

Meaning in English

Our Lord! Forgive our sins, remove from us our misdeeds, and grant that we join the righteous when we die.

2. Dua

رَبَّنَا اغْفِرْلَنَا وَلِإِخْوَانِنَا الَّذِينَ سَبَقُونَا بِالإِيمَانِ وَلَا تَجْعَلْ فِي قُلُوبِنَا غِلًّا لِّلَّذِينَ آمَنُواْ رَبَّنَا إِنَّكَ رَءُوفُ رَّحِيم

Transliteration

Rabbana-ghfir lana wa li ikhwaninal-laziina sabaquuna bil-iman, wa laa taj-al fii quluubina ghillal-lil lazina aamanuu, rabbanaa innaka raufur-rahim.

Meaning in English

Our Lord! Forgive us and our fellow believers who preceded us in faith, and do not allow any resentments into our hearts towards those who believe. Our Lord! Indeed, You are Ever Gracious, Most Merciful.

3. Dua

5. Dua

رَبَّنَا آمَنَّا فَاغْفِرْ لَنَا وَارْحَمْنَا وَأَنتَ خَيْرُ الرَّاحِمِينَ

Transliteration

Rabbanaaa aamannaa faghfir lanaa warhamnaa wa Anta khairur raahimeen.

Meaning

Our Lord, we have believed, so forgive us and have mercy upon us, and You are the best of the merciful.

6. Dua

رَبَّنَا لَا تُؤَاخِذۡنَآ إِن نَّسِينَآ أَوۡ أَخۡطَأۡنَاۚ رَبَّنَا وَلَا تَحۡمِلۡ عَلَيۡنَآ إِصۡرٗا كَمَا حَمَلۡتَهُۥ عَلَى ٱلَّذِينَ مِن قَبۡلِنَاۚ رَبَّنَا وَلَا تُحَمِّلۡنَا مَا لَا طَاقَةَ لَنَا بِهِۦۖ وَٱعۡفُ عَنَّا وَٱغۡفِرۡ لَنَا وَٱرۡحَمۡنَآۚ أَنتَ مَوۡلَىٰنَا فَٱنصُرۡنَا عَلَى ٱلۡقَوۡمِ ٱلۡكَٰفِرِينَ

Transliteration

Rabbanaa laa tu’aakhiznaaa in naseenaaa aw akhtaanaa; Rabbanaa wa laa tahmil-‘alainaaa isran kamaa hamaltahoo ‘alal-lazeena min qablinaa; Rabbanaa wa laa tuhammilnaa maa laa taaqata lanaa bih; wa’fu ‘annaa waghfir lanaa warhamnaa; Anta mawlaanaa fansurnaa ‘alal qawmil kaafireen.

English Translation

Our Lord, do not impose blame upon us if we have forgotten or erred. Our Lord, and lay not upon us a burden like that which You laid upon those before us. Our Lord, and burden us not with that which we have no ability to bear. And pardon us; and forgive us; and have mercy upon us. You are our protector, so give us victory over the disbelieving people.

Surah Baqarah Ayat 286

7. Dua

أَنتَ وَلِيُّنَا فَاغْفِرْ لَنَا وَارْحَمْنَا ۖ وَأَنتَ خَيْرُ الْغَافِرِينَ

Transliteration

Anta waliyyunaa faghfir lanaa warhamnaa wa Anta khairul ghaafireen.

English Translation

You are our Protector, so forgive us and have mercy upon us; and You are the best of forgivers.

رَبَّنَا اغْفِرْ لِي وَلِوَالِدَيَّ وَلِلْمُؤْمِنِينَ يَوْمَ يَقُومُ الْحِسَابُ

Transliteration

Rabbanagh fir lee wa liwaalidaiya wa lilmu’mineena Yawma yaqoomul hisaab.

Our Lord, forgive me and my parents and the believers the Day the account is established.

9. Dua For Forgiveness From Hadith

اللّٰهُمَّ أَنْتَ رَبِّي، لَا إِلٰهَ إِلَّا أَنْتَ، خَلَقْتَنِيْ وَأَنَا عَبْدُكَ، وَأَنَا عَلَى عَهْدِكَ وَوَعْدِكَ مَا اسْتَطَعْتُ، أَعُوْذُ بِكَ مِنْ شَرِّ مَا صَنَعْتُ، أَبُوءُ لَكَ بِنِعْمَتِكَ عَلَىَّ وَأَبُوءُ لَكَ بِذَنْبِيْ، فَاغْفِرْ لِيْ، فَإِنَّهُ لَا يَغْفِرُ الذُّنُوْبَ إِلَّاأَنْتَ

Transliteration

Allahumma anta rabbi la ilaha illa anta, khalaqtani wa ana abduk, wa ana ala ahdika wawa dika mas-tata‘t, a‘oothu bika min sharri ma sana‘t, aboo-o laka bini‘matika ‘alay, wa-aboo-o bithanbee, faghfir lee fa innahu la yaghfiru-thunaba illa ant.

Meaning

O Allah! You are my Lord. There is no true god except You. You have created me, and I am Your slave, and I hold to Your Covenant as far as I can. I seek refuge in You from the evil of what I have done. I acknowledge the favours that You have bestowed upon me, and I confess my sins. Pardon me, for none but You has the power to pardon.

10. Dua For Forgiveness in Arabic

أسْتَغْفِرُ اللهَ العَظِيمَ الَّذِي لاَ إلَهَ إلاَّ هُوَ، الحَيُّ القَيُّومُ، وَأتُوبُ إلَيهِ

Transliteration

Astaghfirullaahal-‘Adheemal-lathee laa ‘ilaaha ‘illaa Huwal-Hayyul-Qayyoomu wa ‘atoobu ‘ilayhi.

Meaning in English

I seek the forgiveness of Allah the Mighty, Whom there is none worthy of worship except Him, the Living, the Eternal, and I repent to Him.

11. Dua

أَسْتَغْفِرُ اللَّهَ وَأَتُوبُ إِلَيْهِ

Transliteration: Astaghfirullah wa’atubu ilaih.

Meaning: I seek forgiveness to Allah and repent towards Him.

13. Dua

اللَّهُمَّ اغْفِرْ لِي خَطِيئَتِي وَجَهْلِي وَإِسْرَافِي فِي أَمْرِي، وَمَا أَنْتَ أَعْلَمُ بِهِ مِنِّي، اللَّهُمَّ اغْفِرْ لِي هَزْلِي وَجِدِّي وَخَطَاىَ وَعَمْدِي، وَكُلُّ ذَلِكَ عِنْدِي

Transliteration

Allahumma ighfirli khati’ati wa jahli wa israfi fi `Amri, wa ma anta a-‘lamu bihi minni. Allahumma ighfirli hazali wa jiddi wa khata’i wa amdi, wa kullu dhalika ‘indi.

Dua For Forgiveness in English

O Allah, forgive my errors and ignorance, my extravagance/immoderation in all of my affairs and what You know best of me. O Allah, forgive my errors what I do seriously, what I do in jest and what I do intentionally. All of these [faults] are in me.

14. Dua

اللَّهُمَّ اغْفِرْ لِي مَا قَدَّمْتُ وَمَا أَخَّرْتُ وَمَا أَسْرَرْتُ وَمَا أَعْلَنْتُ وَمَا أَسْرَفْتُ وَمَا أَنْتَ أَعْلَمُ بِهِ مِنِّي أَنْتَ الْمُقَدِّمُ وَأَنْتَ الْمُؤَخِّرُ لاَ إِلَهَ إِلاَّ أَنْتَ

Transliteration

Allaahum-maghfir lee maa qaddamatu, wa maa ‘akhkhartu, wa maa ‘asrartu, wa maa a’lantu, wa maa ‘asraftu, wa maa ‘Anta a’lamu bihi minnee. ‘Antal-Muqaddimu wa ‘Antal-Mu’akhkhiru laa ‘ilaaha ‘illaa Anta.

Meaning

O Allah, forgive me for those sins which have come to pass as well as those which shall come to pass, and those I have committed in secret as well as those I have made public, and where I have exceeded all bounds as well as those things about which You are more knowledgeable. You are Al-Muqaddim and Al-Mu-akhkhir. None has the right to be worshipped except You. Muslim 771

15. Dua

اللَّهمَّ اغفِر لي ذَنبي كُلَّهُ، دقَّهُ، وجُلَّهُ، وأوَّلَهُ وآخرَهُ وعلانيته وسرَّهُ

Transliteration

Allahum-maghfir li dhanbi kullahu: diqqahu wa jillahu, wa ‘awwalahu wa akhirahu, wa alaniyatahu wa sirrahu.

Meaning

O Allah! Forgive all my sins, the small and the great, first and the last, the open and the secret.

16. Dua

اللَّهُمَّ إِنِّي أَسْأَلُكَ يَا اللَّهُ بِأَنَّكَ الْوَاحِدُ الأَحَدُ الصَّمَدُ الَّذِي لَمْ يَلِدْ وَلَمْ يُولَدْ وَلَمْ يَكُنْ لَهُ كُفُوًا أَحَدٌ أَنْ تَغْفِرَ لِي ذُنُوبِي إِنَّكَ أَنْتَ الْغَفُورُ الرَّحِيمُ

Transliteration

Allahumma inni as aluka ya Allah! Bi annaka wahidul ahadus samad, aladhi lam yalid wa lam yuwlad, wa lam yakul lahu kufuwan ahad, an taghfirali zunubi, innaka antal ghafurur rahim.

Meaning

O Allah, I ask of You, O Allah, as You are the One, the Only, the Self-Sufficient Master, Who begets not nor was He begotten, and there is none equal or comparable to Him, forgive me my sins, for You are the Oft-Forgiving, Most Merciful.

17. Dua

اَللَّهُمَّ اِغْفِرْ لِي, وَارْحَمْنِي, وَاهْدِنِي, وَعَافِنِي, وَارْزُقْنِي

Transliteration

Allahummaghfir li, warhamni, wa-hdini, wa ‘afini, warzuqni.

Meaning

O Allah! Forgive me, have mercy on me, guide me, guard me against harm and provide me with sustenance and salvation.

18. Dua

اللَّهُمَّ اغْفِرْ لِي ذَنْبِي، وَوَسِّعْ لِي فِي دَارِي، وَبَارِكْ لِي فِي رِزْقِي

Transliteration

Allahummaghfirli dhanbi, wa wassi` li fi dari, wa barik li fi rizqi.

Meaning

O Allah! Forgive me my sins, make spacious for me my home and Bless the provisions which You have provided me with i.e. increase the good in it.

19. Dua

اللَّهُمَّ بَاعِدْ بَيْنِي وَبَيْنَ خَطَايَايَ كَمَا بَاعَدْتَ بَيْنَ الْمَشْرِقِ وَالْمَغْرِبِ، ‏‏‏‏‏‏اللَّهُمَّ نَقِّنِي مِنَ الْخَطَايَا كَمَا يُنَقَّى الثَّوْبُ الْأَبْيَضُ مِنَ الدَّنَسِ، ‏‏‏‏‏‏اللَّهُمَّ اغْسِلْ خَطَايَايَ بِالْمَاءِ وَالثَّلْجِ وَالْبَرَدِ

Transliteration

Allaahumma Baaid Bayni wa Bayna Khataayaaya Kama Baaadta Bayna al-Mashriqi wa al-Maghrib. Allaahumma Naqqini mina al-Khataaya Kama Yunaqqa ath-Thawbu al-Abyadhu mina sd-Danas. Allaahumma ighsil Khataayaaya bi al-Maa’i wa ath-Thalji wa al-Barad.

Meaning

O Allah, distance me from my sins as you have distanced the east from the west, O Allah, cleanse me of my sins as a white garment is cleansed of dirt, O Allah, wash away my sins with water, ice and hail.

20. Dua For Forgiveness in Ramadan

اللَّهُمَّ إِنَّكَ عَفُوٌّ تُحِبُّ الْعَفْوَ فَاعْفُ عَنِّي

Transliteration: Allahumma innaka afuwwun tuhibbul afwa fa’fu annee

Meaning: O Allah, You are Forgiving and love forgiveness, so forgive me” or “O Allah, You are Pardoning and love to pardon, so pardon me.”

21. Dua

اللَّهُمَّ إِنِّي ظَلَمْتُ نَفْسِي ظُلْمًا كَثِيرًا، وَلاَ يَغْفِرُ الذُّنُوبَ إِلَّا أَنْتَ، فَاغْفِرْ لِي مَغْفِرَةً مِنْ عِنْدِكَ، وَارْحَمْنِي إِنَّكَ أَنْتَ الغَفُورُ الرَّحِيمُ

Transliteration

Allahumma inni zalamtu nafsi zulman kathira wala yaghfirudh dhunuba illa anta faghfirli maghfiratam min ‘indika war hamni innaka antal ghafurur rahim.

Meaning

O Allah! I have greatly wronged myself and none forgives sins except You, so grant me Your forgiveness and have mercy on me. You are the Forgiving, the Merciful.

22. Dua

رَبِّ اغْفِرْ لِي وَتُبْ عَلَيَّ إنَّكَ أَنْتَ التَّوَّابُ الرَّحِيمُ

Transliteration

Rabb-ighfir li, wa tubb `alayya, innaka Antat-Tawwabur-Rahim.

Meaning

My Lord! Forgive me and pardon me. Indeed, You are the Oft-Returning with compassion and Ever Merciful.

Benefits Of Seeking Forgiveness

There are lots of Astaghfirullah benefits among them are:

  • It safeguards the supplicant against the evil consequences of their sins.
  • It increases the blessings of Allah (both material and spiritual).
  • It is one of the ways of finding inner peace and tranquillity.
  • It purifies ones from the physiological results of sins.
  • Astaghfirullah turns evil deeds to good deeds.
  • Allah forgives those who sincerely seek forgiveness unconditionally.
  • Whoever makes Istighfar frequently, Allah will provide a way for him out of every distress and provide for him from sources he could never expect.
  • Astaghfirullah opens the door of sustenance.
  • It opens the door of mercy.
  • Istighfar opens the door of knowledge.
  • It is also gateway of productivity.
  • Istighfaar is the means of attaining forgiveness; hence, Allah, the Mighty and Sublime, commanded seeking forgiveness in numerous verses of the Qur’an.

  • On the Day of Judgment, while people are in heat and sweat, the one seeking forgiveness is in the shade of the throne.
  • When people leave the gathering, the one seeking forgiveness is among the righteous on the right side of Allah’s allies.
  • Achieving purity for the individual and society from evil deeds. Invocation by the bearers of the throne of our generous Lord for the one seeking forgiveness.
