Anxiety, depression, and stress are three common mental health issues that can greatly impact a person’s daily life. While therapy and medication can help, Muslims find solace in Islamic practices, such as making dua, or supplications to Allah.

There are many dua for anxiety that you can say to remove depression, anxiety, grief, and sorrow.

The best remedy for anxiety is remembrance of Allaah (dhikr), and regularly praying on time, and avoiding too much free time.

To treat anxiety: you need to increase your faith and your trust in Allah; you need to make more du`a and pray more; you should relax by means of doing acts of worship as they have a great effect on the soul, dispelling many kinds of psychological disease.

You can recite these Du`as to remove anxiety and stress:

1. Dua For Anxiety in Arabic

اللّهُـمَّ إِنِّي عَبْـدُكَ ابْنُ عَبْـدِكَ ابْنُ أَمَتِـكَ نَاصِيَتِي بِيَـدِكَ، مَاضٍ فِيَّ حُكْمُكَ، عَدْلٌ فِيَّ قَضَاؤكَ أَسْأَلُـكَ بِكُلِّ اسْمٍ هُوَ لَكَ سَمَّـيْتَ بِهِ نَفْسَكَ أِوْ أَنْزَلْتَـهُ فِي كِتَابِكَ، أَوْ عَلَّمْـتَهُ أَحَداً مِنْ خَلْقِـكَ أَوِ اسْتَـأْثَرْتَ بِهِ فِي عِلْمِ الغَيْـبِ عِنْـدَكَ أَنْ تَجْـعَلَ القُرْآنَ رَبِيـعَ قَلْبِـي، وَنورَ صَـدْرِي وجَلَاءَ حُـزْنِي وذَهَابَ هَمِّـي

Transliteration

Allahumma inni ‘abduka wa ibn ‘abdika wa ibn amatika, nasiyati bi yadika, madin fiyya hukmuka, ‘adlun fiyya qadauka, as aluka bi kulli ismin huwa laka sammayta bihi nafsaka aw anzaltahu fi kitabika aw ‘allamtahu ahadan min khalqika aw ista’tharta bihi fi ‘ilm il-ghaybi ‘indak an taj’ala al-Qurana rabi’a qalbi wa nura sadri wa jala a huzni wa dhahaba hammi.

Meaning In English

O Allah, I am Your slave, son of Your slave, son of Your female slave, my forelock is in Your hand, Your command over me is forever executed and Your decree over me is just. I ask You by every Name belonging to You which You named Yourself with, or revealed in Your Book, or You taught to any of Your creation, or You have preserved in the knowledge of the unseen with You, that You make the Quran the life of my heart and the light of my breast, and a departure for my sorrow and a release for my anxiety.

Abd-Allah ibn Mas’ud narrated that the Prophet (peace and blessings of Allah be upon him) said:

“No person suffers any anxiety or grief , and says this dua – but Allah will take away his sorrow and grief, and give him in their stead joy.

It was said: O Messenger of Allah, should we not learn them (these words)? He said: Yes indeed; whoever hears them should learn them.” Narrated by Ahmad (3528)

2. Dua

Narrated by Abu Dawud (5090) and Ahmad (27898) from Abu Bakrah (may Allah be pleased with him) that the Messenger of Allah (peace and blessings of Allah be upon him) said: “The Du`a of the person who is in distress is:

O Allaah, for Your mercy I hope, so do not leave me in charge of my affairs even for the blink of an eye; rectify all my affairs. There is no god except You.

3. Dua

Narrated by Muslim (2730) from Ibn `Abbas (may Allah be pleased with him) that the Prophet of Allah (blessings and peace of Allah be upon him) used to say, when he felt distressed:

لَا إلَهَ إِلَّا اللَّهُ الْعَظـيمُ الْحَلِـيمْ، لَا إِلَهَ إِلَّا اللَّهُ رَبُّ العَـرْشِ العَظِيـمِ، لَا إِلَـهَ إِلَّا اللَّهْ رَبُّ السَّمَـوّاتِ ورّبُّ الأَرْضِ ورَبُّ العَرْشِ الكَـريم

Transliteration

La ilaha illal-lahul-‘atheemul-haleem, la ilaha illal-lahu rabbul-‘arshil-‘atheem, la ilaha illal-lahu rabbus-samawati wa rabbul-ardi wa rabbul-‘arshil-kareem.

The meaning of duaa for anxiety is There is no god except Allah, the All-Mighty, the Forbearing; there is no god except Allah, the Lord of the Mighty Throne; there is no god except Allah, Lord of the heavens, Lord of the earth and Lord of the noble Throne.

4. Dua For Difficult Times

لَّآ إِلَٰهَ إِلَّآ أَنتَ سُبْحَٰنَكَ إِنِّى كُنتُ مِنَ ٱلظَّٰلِمِينَ

Transliteration

La ilaha illa anta subhanaka inni kuntu minaz zalimin.

Meaning

None has the right to be worshipped except You; Glory be unto You. Indeed I have been from the wrongdoers.

5. Dua

Anas (may Allah be pleased with him) narrated that the Prophet (peace and blessings of Allah be upon him) used to say, when something upset him:

يَا حَيُّ يَا قَيُّوْمُ بِرَحْمَتِكَ أَسْتَغِيْث

Transliteration

Ya Hayyu ya Qayyum, bi Rahmatika astaghith.

Meaning in English

O Ever-Living One, O Everlasting One, by Your mercy I seek help.

6. Dua

Asma bint ‘Umays (may Allah be pleased with her) said: The Messenger of Allah (peace and blessings of Allah be upon him) said to me: “Shall I not teach you some words to say when you feel distressed?

اللهُ اللهُ رَبِّ لا أُشْرِكُ بِهِ شَيْئاً

Transliteration: Allah, Allah, Rabbi la ushriku bihi shay-an.

Meaning: Allah, Allah, my Lord, I do not associate anything with Him.

7. Dua

اللّهُمَّ لا سَهْلَ إِلاّ ما جَعَلتَهُ سَهلاً، وَأَنْتَ تَجْعَلُ الْحَزَنَ إِذا شِئْتَ سَهـْلاً

Transliteration

Allahumma la sahla illa ma ja ‘altahu sahla, wa anta taj ‘alul hazna ith-a shi’ ta’ sahlan.

Meaning

O Allah, there is no ease except in that which You have made easy, and You make the difficulty, if You wish, easy.

Whenever you feel anxious and worried, hasten to do wudoo’ and pray, and read Qur’aan, and keep yourself busy with beneficial actions, especially the dhikrs for morning and evening, and when going to sleep, eating, drinking, and entering and leaving the home.

How To Treat Anxiety

  1. Prayer: Engage in regular prayer (Salah) and meditation to find solace and connect spiritually.
  2. Recitation of Quranic Verses: Read and reflect upon specific verses from the Quran that offer comfort and reassurance.
  3. Dua (Supplication): Practice making heartfelt supplications to seek guidance and relief from anxiety.
  4. Charitable Acts: Engage in acts of charity (Sadaqah) or volunteer work to foster a sense of purpose and positivity.
  5. Fasting: Participate in voluntary fasting (Sunnah fasting) as a means of self-discipline and spiritual growth.
  6. Islamic Remembrance Practices: Utilize Dhikr (remembrance of Allah) to center your mind and find peace in moments of anxiety.
  7. Reflect on Tawakkul (Trust in Allah): Trust in Allah’s plan and remember that difficulties are temporary.
