اللهمَّ مالكَ الملكِ تُؤتي الملكَ مَن تشاءُ، وتنزعُ الملكَ ممن تشاءُ، وتُعِزُّ مَن تشاءُ، وتذِلُّ مَن تشاءُ، بيدِك الخيرُ إنك على كلِّ شيءٍ قديرٌ، رحمنُ الدنيا والآخرةِ ورحيمُهما، تعطيهما من تشاءُ، وتمنعُ منهما من تشاءُ، ارحمْني رحمةً تُغنيني بها عن رحمةِ مَن سواك

Transliteration

Allaahumma Maalik al-mulk, tu’ti al-mulk man tasha’ wa tanzi’ al-mulk mimman tasha’, wa tu’izzu man tasha’ wa tudhilul man tasha’, bi yadika al-khayr, innaka ‘ala kulli shay’in qadeer, Rahmaan al-dunya wa’l-aakhirah wa raheemahuma, tu’teeyahuma man tasha’ wa tamna’ minhuma man tasha’, arhamni rahmatan taghnini biha ‘an rahmati man siwaaka.

Allahumma Maalikul Mulk Dua Means O Allaah, Sovereign of all, You give dominion to whomsoever You will and You take dominion away from whomsoever You will, You exalt whomsoever You will and You bring low whomsoever You will. In Your hand is all goodness and You are able to do all things. Most Merciful and Most compassionate in this world and in the Hereafter, You give them to whomsoever You will and withhold them from whomsoever You will. Bestow mercy upon Me in such a manner that I have no need of the mercy of anyone but You.

Al-Tabaraani narrated in al-Mu’jam al-Sagheer that Anas ibn Maalik (may Allaah be pleased with him) said: The Messenger of Allaah (peace and blessings of Allaah be upon him) said to Mu’aadh (may Allaah be pleased with him): “Shall I not teach you a du’aa’ which you may say even if you have debt like Mount Uhud, so that Allaah might pay it off for you? Then he mentioned the above Dua.

Classed as hasan by al-Albaani in Saheeh al-Targheeb wa’l-Tarheeb (1821).

There is also a beautiful verse in ‘ Surah Al Imraan, verse 26 that has same meaning. The verse is Eemaan (faith) Boosters in the true sense of the term!

Qulillahumma Malikal Mulki in Arabic

The full ayat is:

قُلِ ٱللَّهُمَّ مَٰلِكَ ٱلۡمُلۡكِ تُؤۡتِى ٱلۡمُلۡكَ مَن تَشَآءُ وَتَنزِعُ ٱلۡمُلۡكَ مِمَّن تَشَآءُ وَتُعِزُّ مَن تَشَآءُ وَتُذِلُّ مَن تَشَآءُۖ بِيَدِكَ ٱلۡخَيۡرُۖ إِنَّكَ عَلَىٰ كُلِّ شَىۡءٍ قَدِيرٌ

Transliteration

Quli allahumma malika almulkitu’teel mulka man tashao watanzi’ul mulka mimman tashao watu izzu man tashao watuzhillu man tashao biyadikal khayr, innaka ala kulli shay-in qadeer.

Qulillahumma Malikal Mulki Dua In English

Qulillahumma malikal mulki means Say, “O Allah, Owner of Sovereignty, You give sovereignty to whom You will and You take sovereignty away from whom You will. You honor whom You will and You humble whom You will. In Your hand is [all] good. Indeed, You are over all things competent.

Although you are not asking Allah directly when reciting this Aya, You can read it when you are making dua as a means of praising Allah.

Explanation Of The Verse

According to Imam IBN Kathir, this verse is indeed encouraging gratitude. He explained the verse as follows;

Allah said, Say, O Muhammad, while praising your Lord, thanking Him, relying in all matters upon Him and trusting in Him.

O Allah! Possessor of the power, meaning, all sovereignty is Yours. You give power to whom You will, and You take power from whom You will, and You endue with honor whom You will, and You humiliate whom You will.

Meaning, You are the Giver, You are the Taker, it is Your will that occurs and whatever You do not will, does not occur.

This Ayah encourages thanking Allah for the favors He granted His Messenger and his Ummah.

Allah transferred the Prophethood from the Children of Israel to the Arab, Qurashi, Makkan, unlettered Prophet, the Final and Last of all Prophets and the Messenger of Allah to all mankind and Jinn.

Allah endowed the Prophet with the best of qualities from the prophets before him. Allah also granted him extra qualities that no other Prophet or Messenger before him was endowed with, such as granting him (more) knowledge of Allah and His Law, knowledge of more of the matters of the past and the future, such as what will occur in the Hereafter.

Allah allowed Muhammad’s Ummah to reach the eastern and western parts of the world and gave dominance to his religion and Law over all other religions and laws.

Here are some points to summarize the lessons we can learn from these two sublime verses of the glorious Qur’an:

Mankind owes an obligation to glorify Allah as there is none worthy of glorification and exaltation except Him.

This Ayah encourages Muslims to thank Allah for the favors He granted to His last and final Messenger and his Ummah.

Muslims have been taught and prompted to make this special prayer, which in a subtle way, gives an indication that Muslims will overpower the disbelievers and ultimately falsehood will be uprooted!

Appearing in the form of a prayer, verse No. 26 so eloquently brings into focus the most perfect power of Allah as it manifests itself in the rise and fall of nations and in the revolutions that rock countries.

Allah is the Maalik-al Mulk, the Lord of all dominion, the Possessor of powers and all Sovereignty belongs to Him. He is the Owner of everything.

Whomever He likes, He gives dominion to him and whomsoever He likes, He takes away dominion from him. He is Lord of all Honour. Honour belongs to Him alone. He honours whomsoever He likes and He abases whomsoever He likes.

As Allah is the Lord of all Power, it follows that man should consider all power — whether it may be in the form of a personal rule or a demo­cratic government or in any other form — a trust from Allah, and should use that power according to the directions given by Him.

This Qur’anic concept of power negates the concept of king/hero worship and also the belief in the ‘Divine right’ of kings. It also refutes the claim of demo­cracy that its sovereignty is absolute and that it has no concern with God.

Honour, privilege, status and leadership in the world have to be earned through devotion and hard work.

Leadership is an ‘amanah’, Trust, from Allah. If a person or a group entrusted with authority tampers with this Trust, then Allah snatches leadership and gives to those who are better and more deserving.

Allah effected a permanent transfer of leadership from Bani Israeel to Bani Ismaeel. He does things as He is Al Muiz, Al Muzil and Al Hakeem.

Allah allowed Prophet Muhammad’s Ummah to reach the eastern and western parts of the world and gave dominance to his religion and Law over all other religions and laws

In Allah’s Hand is all goodness. One of the meanings of ‘biyadikal khayr’ is that goodness is only in the Hands of Allah and the other meaning is that there is nothing but goodness in Allah’s hand and that He is the Source of all goodness and blessings.

Day and Night are in Allah’s control, so are the seasons – spring, summer, fall and winter.

Allah brings out the seed from the plant and the plant from the seed; the date from its seed and the date’s seed from the date; the chicken from the egg and the egg from the chicken..

Allah created man from a life­less matter, that is dust. And again this very man, after his death, becomes the same lifeless matter, dust. In this way He creates living creatures from lifeless matter and brings forth dead bodies from the living.

Allah gives whomever He wills innumerable amounts of wealth while depriving others from it, out of wisdom and justice. He is the Lord of abundant measure.

Some are rich, some are poor. Some are in prosperity, some in adversity. Some enjoy honour, some suffer humiliation. Allah knows best whom to give what, and in what measure. This belief removes the evils of greed and jealousy from the hearts of true believers in Islam.

How can human beings, then, try to isolate themselves and their affairs from the Creator Who controls and plans everything?
